CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Seastnάn Fran Baiseal
Age: 19-21 Human Equivalent
World Information: Setting this character was built for can be found here. TLDR: Mid-fantasy with darker themes, 'angelic/demonic' influences but on a much more mortal level than depicted in religions.
Character Information:
Born in the eastern forests with a crescent moon on their waist, to the side of their abdomen, Fran was an odd one. Seasnάn -- Fran hereafter, for convenience – was born. Nymphs mature quickly, reaching adulthood in a fairly short time compared to their long life-span. They were raised to be a 'natural' Nymph, soon recognized as gifted with stronger magical prowess than others were capable of. When they were old enough to survive on their own -- in other words, talk and get their own food -- the ones that raised them left as well, this was just another part of their culture. Surviving was fairly easy, at least. Their connection to the world made harvesting a natural skill, and they survived easily on a vegetarian diet. Meat was, mostly, abhorred. Slowly, Fran learned the ways of their race, along with many others; a natural instinct you could say, to learn to hide, blend in, move quickly, and move without being heard. Learning was perhaps a poor choice of words, it was as instinctive as a spider spinning a web. Their magical abilities, on the other hand, were a slow development. Learning to control them, to manipulate them, and how to identify/counter the magic of others. It took years --decades even-- but, in time, learned these as well, satisfied that they could now live freely. If only.
As seems to often be the case with long-lived races, their earlier formal years blurred into one stretch of time, with few events spread between. Fran's earlier life was dotted with exploration, traveling about the still primal world they lived in. Passing through the forests, the mountain ranges, planes, and deserts. Always careful not to bring too much attention to themselves, or any at all if they could. It was during this time that they picked up their musical habits, a simple bamboo pan flute that was durable, and easily reconstructed if damaged, learning to weave their magic through the melodies as gracefully as a bird swooping onto food. Occasionally they would interact with other travelers, usually monks or other peaceful folks who didn't seem like a threat. Traveling academics, musicians, or storytellers were the best choices, easily lured into the woods through their music. What curious traveler wouldn't investigate the source of such hauntingly simple songs?
What they did with these entranced travelers was by no means sinister, often just talking to them, learning about where they came from and where they were going. Few folks traveling on their own declined an encounter with the more fabled races, some of the kinder ones even considered it a great honor. It was through these whimsical encounters, and their subtle surveillance of the lands around them, that they learned what they did of human cultures. While travelers were often fairly amicable, they was well aware of the dangers of approaching civilization, and kept their distance even in the most curious of times.
It was only in the last decade or so that events began turning for the worse. The war between the human and demon kingdoms had descended into a lulling period, with disaffected members of both sides living in each others communities despite the poor treatment they received. Slavery, as a growing market, had become far more common in the human domain. Peculiar races like the forest-folk and the anima were practically gold-mines waiting to happen, if they weren’t so difficult to track down and capture. On more than one occasion the nymph had found himself making a hasty retreat, using their magic to help them escape, sometimes only just making it out. They have grown far more careful since then, always on the move, especially when they make contact with a traveler.
The humans were a peculiar race to Fran, even their children could match their fully grown height; they were intimidating, and easily a threat, but Fran couldn't find any reason to blame them for their harm. They were a young, growing race; if only they could see that destroying nature wasn't necessary for their survival. Fran had decided they were not evil, simply ignorant. They caught other races, used them, extorted them, sold them off as slaves, or forced the stronger ones to work for them as guards or fighters, but this was more of a side effect of many years interacting with the demonic forces, at least in their opinion. In truth, the nymph simply hadn’t had many chances to interact with the broader human culture, especially not the commoners.
Personality:
Nymphs:
Being nature spirits and fey, nymphs are generally playful, curious, teasing, and emotional. Their moods come in large sways and leaps and bounds as opposed to subtle shifts. They’re connected inherently to the world around them, reflected in a somewhat primal nature. In general, you could call them ‘open’ and ‘simple’ with their emotions, having no reason to hide their feelings. This will depend on the nature of the individual nymph though, as they tend to take after the aspect of nature that they align with. Usually denoted by some marking on the body, it could be anything from a tree to the ocean, or fire, or a pond, the sun, or even the moon in Fran’s case. The nymphs that aren’t bound to more specific locations are often prone to wanderlust and the trappings of their only semi-mortal minds, often forgetting how quickly time passes for humans and struggling to understand some of their ways.
Fran:
By default, Fran is quiet and cautious, lacking the trust to really open up or relax around strangers without warming up to them first. While they still display a lot of the more general traits of nymphs, a dangerous setting, and constant risk has helped them develop a reserved approach. They’ll try and approach people individually, or in very small groups, ensuring it’s safe to do so. Large groups of humans tend to make Fran incredibly anxious and are a sure-fire way to make the nymph shrink back into a much more wary, careful state. Due to their lack of experience with humans, however, the nymph can often be quite naive, often taking people at face value.
If they don’t feel threatened, Fran defaults to a lot of the standard nymph traits, it’s only after a bit of interaction that their lunar influence tends to shine through, sometimes rather literally. Generally speaking, they’re quite optimistic and inquisitive, giving off a warm, joyous impression to most people. Some might describe them as “So damn chipper...” Being upfront and open has its advantages, it’s hard to take anything they say for a lie, but it has also made them incredibly gullible, as they’re just not used to dealing with people lying that often. Much like their Lunar influence, Fran tends to reflect the emotions of those they interact with by mirroring happiness, sadness, anger, and playfulness in turn. This connection also drives the Nymph’s natural wanderlust.
With those they trust, Fran is casual, affectionate, and often somewhat clingy. Whether it be physical or emotional, living and traveling the world on their own has left them in a lonely state, craving the social connection of others that had become so much harder to maintain. Especially when staying in one place for too long, or in large groups, was dangerous.
Fran’s quite aware that they can’t fight their nature, in order to cope with a colder, more dangerous world they had to change how they approached people to minimize the risk of falling into the grasp of someone with ill intentions. Unfortunately, their naive nature and the burning desire for more connections driven by loneliness has made them rather impatient, often rushing their judgment process for folks who seem ‘nice enough’.
Their motivations are long term, but simple in nature, much like them. As a creature of whimsy and nature, the fey is driven to learn about humans and other strange races, explore the world around them, enjoy themselves, and to perhaps even develop deeper social connections than just random travelers and isolated humans. Despite their inquisitive nature, Fran hasn’t had much in the way of formal education, most of what they know was learned through centuries of questioning and note-taking. One could certainly describe them as ignorant, or naive, given how much they have yet to learn about human society.
5-10 Key Character Traits: Warm, Curious, Careful, Honest, Emotional, Ignorant, Gullible, Frivolous, Trusting, Aimless.
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character's personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? Fits, please~
Opt-Outs: Demon, Minotaur, Were-Bear, Troll, Arachne, Naga
